At IFA, Sony showed off its Xperia Z5 family in small, medium and large sizes. The biggest of the bunch is the Xperia Z5 Premium, and it's equipped with an eye-popping 4K display.

Thanks to its 5.5" 3840×2160 panel, the Xperia Z5 Premium has an astounding 806 pixels per inch. Sony says its 4K display is the first such screen in any smartphone. A big screen means big dimensions: the Xperia Z5 measures 6.1" x 3" x 0.31" (154.4 x 76.0 x 7.8 mm) and weighs 6.4 oz (180 g). The battery is big, too, at 3,430 mAh. The Z5 Premium  will be available in black, chrome, and gold.

A step down from the Premium is the regular Xperia Z5. This phone's 5.2" display isn't much smaller than the Premium's, and its 1080p resolution is still good for 423 PPI. The standard Z5 is slightly smaller than its Premium stable mate at  5.7" x 2.8" x 0.29" (146 x 72 x 7.3 mm), and it's lighter, too, at 5.4 oz (154 g). The midsize Xperia is backed by a 2900-mAh battery, and it's finished in gold, black, white, and emerald green.

The third model of this group is the Xperia Z5 Compact. At 4.6", the 720p display has a pixel density of 320 PPI. The smallest Xperia measures just 4.5" x 2.4" (127 x 65mm) in height and width, but it's the thickest model of the three at 0.35" (8.9 mm). A 2700-mAh battery holds the Compact's juice, and it weighs 4.9 ounces. The outer shell comes in white, coral, yellow, and slate gray.

Sony says the cameras in the Xperia Z5 family are the best-ever on a smartphone, for what it's worth. Each Xperia Z5 shares the same 1/2.3" Exmor RS 23-megapixel sensor and wide-angle, f/2 lens. The camera can supposedly auto-focus in just 30 milliseconds, and an LED flash should shed some light on dim subjects. Around front, the Xperia Z5s have a five-megapixel selfie shooter so you can see the broccoli in your teeth. The Z5 rear camera can record video at resolutions up to 4K.

Internally, the Xperias are all very similar. Each Z5 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core SoC with Adreno 430 graphics. The two larger models have 3GB of RAM, while the Compact will have 2GB. Each model will have 32GB of flash storage and slots for microSD cards up to 200GB in size. The Xperias run Android 5.1 with Sony's customizations. Sony claims that all three models can last up to two days off the charger.

The Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact will arrive in October, while Premium buyers will have to wait until November.
