Phones that allow users to make calls via Skype’s voice-over-IP (VoIP) software have been around for some time now, but Philips and Netgear are about to break new ground with new Skype phones that don’t require a PC to operate. Philips’ phone, dubbed the VOIP841, will hit stores in December at an undisclosed price. Meanwhile, Netgear’s SPH101 phone is already available for pre-order for $299.99 from Skype’s online store. Both phones include a base station that uses the DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) protocol. The base station plugs into a broadband connection and a phone line. The phones can make and receive both Skype and traditional landline calls.
