Welcome, Amazon Prime Air.

Called Amazon Prime Air, or just Prime Air, these Amazon drones are going to be capable of delivering your Amazon order much more quickly than the average mail service, even faster than Primes two-day shipping. Prime Air will use delivery drones to deliver packages to the customer within 60 minutes of receiving an order.

As the program continues to grow, Amazon Prime users will be able to have their orders delivered via drone using the same ordering process that is already in place. 

How Will They Work?

Amazon has created and worked with more than 25 prototypes since the start of Amazon Prime Air. These Prime Air drones are not small — with a width of 6.5 feet and a height of near feet, these drones are much bigger than the average camera drone. This is, of course, because they’ll be carrying cargo. The drones will be programmed to drop packages on a specific spot from about four feet off the ground.

As for the drone’s volume levels, an Amazon spokesperson has said they are working to reduce noise and ensure the drones don’t cause ample disruption when en route. 

These drones are unlike many drones that already exist. For example, the Prime Air drones can sense nearby objects and obstacles and will reroute themselves to avoid a collision. The drone’s ability to avoid barriers means it can travel further than previously thought. This ensures the device is safe when en route and safe when landing. 

These drones can do more than detect fixed objects. Amazon Prime Air drones are capable of spotting both static and moving objects, as well as differentiating between the two. By understanding whether the drone is dealing with something still, like a pole, or something moving, like another drone, the drone will reroute itself to continue on a safe path forward. 

When Will They Start? 

In June, Amazon announced that they’d start delivering packages using drones. The company is starting in Lockeford, California. They chose Lockeford because of the typical weather and its flat typography. Lockeford is also close to the highway and is unincorporated, making it simpler to put the wheels in motion.

Amazon says the residents of Lockeford, California, within four miles of the program site that choose to participate in this trial program will be able to select from a list of items under five pounds. These lightweight items will be stored in a warehouse closeby. From there, items will be dropped in backyards. 

Amazon is leasing the nearby warehouse, which belongs to a local concrete maker. According to Lockeford County officials, Amazon is still working on getting its permits in order. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will also have to review the company.

Amazon Prime Air: Yes or No?

Not everyone is happy about the drones, though. Many people are nervous about how they’ll work and land. Plus, if their cameras will collect data and information when flying over people’s homes and seeing into their private backyards. 

Will people switch to Amazon, causing their local economies to suffer? Many people are also concerned about what the drones and the speedy delivery will mean for local mom-and-pop shops in the area. 

Of course, a company the size of Amazon has its own team to handle small, local government agencies and other such communications. Lockeford, California, isn’t the only town ready to experience Amazon Prime Air. The city of College Station, Texas, is set to vote on a plan to introduce drone delivery services on July 14.

So far, only three companies utilizing drone delivery have gone through processes with the FAA to earn their air carrier certification. The air carrier certificate is a requirement for operating drones with such advanced abilities.

Space exploration is growing and changing all the time. As we continue to make progress and spend more time exploring space, scientists and astronauts are finding new ways to explore what’s beyond Earth.

From being able to measure the universe to the discovery of Oumuamua, recent discoveries abound. One of the newer technologies for space exploration and rocket launches is the use of balloons. 

Using balloons to launch rockets isn’t new technology, though. The concept actually originated in the 1930s as a way to improve high-altitude atmospheric science. In the 1930s, an Austrian prince named Victor Hess took several high-altitude flights to measure high-energy particles in the atmosphere, making him the first pilot of a scientific balloon. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1936 after his discovery of cosmic rays. 

Simply put, instead of fighting gravity, these “rockoons” use gravity to their advantage. Here is how balloons can be used for the first stages of a rocket launch.

How are Balloons Used in Rocket Launches?

Using technology from the early 20th century, hot-air balloons drop spacecraft from 60,000 feet above Earth. This means balloons can be used to carry rockets to extreme altitudes before launching payloads into orbit. First, a small rocket is hung under a very large balloon. Made of polyethylene or some other thin plastic, scientists fill the balloons with helium.

The discovery of filling the polyethylene balloons with load-bearing tape, however, wasn’t made until after World War II, when we entered the Space Age. This discovery allowed for larger and heavier payloads. These balloons were so large that they had to be launched from aircraft carriers. 

So how do these balloons work? As the balloon rises higher into the air, the helium begins to heat, and the atmospheric pressure reduces. This allows it to expand and fill the remaining balloon volume. Once the balloon adequately fills, it reaches staggering heights, taking it higher than most of the atmosphere. Once it reaches this height, the rocket is now in near-perfect conditions, allowing the rocket to fire due to a lack of atmospheric pressure. This also makes the rocket more efficient in its takeoff.

Why use Balloons for Launching Rockets?

Companies like Leo Aerospace calls these devices “rockoons.” Scientists conceptualized these air-balloon rockets and turned them into fully-autonomous and reusable systems. Completely unconventional, these air-launch systems require large amounts of propellants to reach the required velocity to send their payloads into orbit.

This system reduces how much propellant you need to launch your rocket. Using this system also involves rocket launching from an altitude with low air resistance and requires less force to escape the gravitational pull of our planet. 

Another major benefit of “rockoons” is that they are amenable to many types of payloads. Using the “rockoons” method allows for microsatellites and other small payloads to be sent off, which is becoming much more common.

Rockets can carry satellites by keeping them folded up and stored in fairings. Fairings are basically just cases that keep their cargo safe from damage during launch. When using a “rockoon,” the altitude is less bumpy, meaning the air is much kinder to your payload and rocket. This means there is a much lower chance of damaging whatever you’re launching into space. This also means the fairing can be less aerodynamic because its contents are safer.

A Cost-Effective Process

Hot-air balloons for rocket launches are more cost-effective because this process uses launch vehicles that are both smaller and lighter. Currently, most air-launch systems involve the aircraft bringing a spacecraft utilizing rocket motors, or just a rocket, to launch altitudes.

Flying these ambitious devices to near-space is a quick and cost-effective solution. NASA even called it the “gold standard.”

Using these balloons is also cost-effective in that it takes much less time to prepare for a launch using a balloon than compared to other launch methods. Typically developed in much shorter timeframes, balloon instruments save lots of money. 

Balloon Rocket Launches

Used for everything from studying the atmosphere to discovering the Van Allen belts, balloon launches or “rockoons” have been an integral part of the study of our planet and its surroundings.

In fact, the discovery and creation of using balloons to launch payloads led to scientist John Mather working on the Cosmic Background Explorer Satellite (COBE). Mathers was able to use the measurements of COBES cosmic microwave background radiation to secure the Big Bang Theory.

Science has come a long way in the last hundred years, but it doesn’t look like the balloon method is leaving any time soon.

Zuckerberg has invested massive resources into Meta and his pursuit of the metaverse. However, there isn’t much payoff to this point. After numerous delays and setbacks, current projections show that the augmented reality glasses might be ready by 2024. However, after a number of delays already it would not be surprising to see it happen again. What is Meta?

For those who don’t already know, Meta is Mark Zuckerberg’s attempt to introduce the metaverse.

The metaverse is a somewhat complex topic as a whole. Essentially, it’s the process of creating an entire virtual reality world and society. Users will have a device that allows them to enter this virtual reality, create an avatar, and interact with other users in the metaverse. Zuckerberg has massive plans for the metaverse, even referring to it as a “Holy Grail of Technology.” These plans all start with his company, Meta, and their pursuit of augmented reality glasses. They believe that through augmented reality glasses and the metaverse social connection can reach new heights.

Supposedly, users will be able to interact, learn, and socialize with one another in virtual 3D spaces. While the plans for the metaverse and augmented reality glasses are stunning, the reality at this point is a bit disappointing.

Early Delays

Despite Zuckerberg’s lofty goals for the glasses, current developments show that we are still well away from them being ready for market.

Currently, Meta employees are working rapidly to try to deliver a working product by 2024. However, the project has already been delayed a few times, and to this point, there is no working wearable prototype. The current product used for tests and demonstration is fixed to a table. It’s not near ready for consumer usage.

Despite the struggles in early development, the company is already working on a second and third generation of the glasses for 2026 and 2028. While the metaverse may change our society completely, it seems likely that we will have to wait at least a few years. The augmented reality glasses will have to hit the market and show up in homes.

Battle of the Tech Giants

While Zuckerberg and Meta may promote the societal benefits of the metaverse, other factors are most definitely in play. Despite the success of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg’s company needed a rebrand. Recent privacy and data scandals have left many with a bad taste in their mouth, Zuckerberg included.

The hope is that by being at the forefront of this next wave, Zuckerberg and Meta can shed these negative associations.

Furthermore, along with a battle for their reputation, the company is also fighting a battle with the other tech giants. Companies such as Microsoft and Apple dominate the market currently. And at this point, Meta and Facebook’s products can only be used in conjunction with another device.

This puts Zuckerberg’s company directly under the thumb of these other tech giants. The hope is that by producing the augmented reality glasses, Meta can create a product that can function independently. It won’t require a connection to another device. Despite the larger implications of the metaverse, the pursuit of this as a product largely comes back to company reputation and competition.

Playdate devices come with their own unique games that can’t be found anywhere else.

The device features a directional pad and buttons as well as a small crank on the side that can unfold. The crank does not actually power or charge the device, but can instead provide functionality for certain games on the device. The Playdate also comes with WiFi functionality, Bluetooth, and even a small speaker attachment.

As mentioned above, the Playdate comes with 24 original and unique games. However, these games don’t come with the console right away. Instead, users will receive two games each week after setting up their device for 12 weeks.

Technology is constantly growing and evolving in ways we could not have imagined fifty years ago. There have been so many amazing technological advances in the last generation across every single industry. From having one wireless device at our fingertips that is a camera, a phone, and holds the entire internet on it to robotic rats that can fit in snug spaces and save lives coming to fruition…the future looks bright indeed.

But wait. What exactly is a robotic rat and what does it do?

In short, a robotic rat — or a “roborat” — is a small mechanical rat that mimics the movements of real rats. Called “legged robots” in the report abstract, the goal is to use these creatures in real-world scenarios as often as possible.

What do they use to manufacture robotic rats?

These rats’ bodies are replicas of real Norway rats — also known as rattus norvegicus — meaning their bodies are incredibly life-like. In fact, the heads, legs, and waists come with two degrees of free movement for the animatronic animal, just like the real thing.

While current designs have four realistic legs, older versions of the robotic rats didn’t have limbs. Instead, they had wheels to roll around, instead of walking. Once they replaced the wheels with legs, the rats became much more agile and dependable tools.

The average robotic rat is 7.5 inches in length and weighs 7.8 ounces. The manufacturer created the rat’s head and body using a photosensitive resin material. To ensure strength in the four legs, designers utilized strong nylon. A tail seems like it may be useless or get in the way at first glance. However, it actually helps the machine remain balanced. It does this by moving up and down and is made from soft rubber.

Like a remote-controlled toy, operators control these robots using a “remote” on a phone or a computer. The rat itself can move at a speed of roughly six inches per second. It’s powered using batteries that last up to half an hour.

How can robotic rats help during natural disasters?

Developed in China by researchers at the Beijing Institute of Technology and Tsinghua University, designers are calling the prototype rat a “Small-Sized Quadruped Robotic Rat” or “SQuRo” for short. This prototype will allow the researchers to study and learn their movements in a more direct and hands-on way.

Teams use these rats to move through small spaces and over uneven landscapes to aid in the search for disaster survivors. Designed to be able to get back on their feet if they tip over, these rats are both agile and adaptable.

Because they weigh less than eight ounces, they can flip themselves back onto their feet if they fall over. This is very likely when navigating rubble after a natural disaster strikes.

By being able to navigate obstacles, spaces as narrow as 3.5 inches, and inclines as steep as 15 degrees, robotic rats can locate survivors with attached sensors or even cameras under seven ounces. They can also turn around thanks to their long cervical spines.

How else might we use these devices in the future?

Once the rats hit the market, they will not only be able to save people from disasters like buildings collapsing. Because of their small size and agile bodies, recovery teams can use them to inspect underground tunnels, pipes, and other tight spaces. By inspecting these networks of small passageways, roborats may even be able to prevent disaster by finding faulty or weak areas in a network of underground tunnels.

Professor Shi Qing — the team lead, a professor, and the vice-director of the intelligent robotics at the Beijing Institute of Technology — has even talked about running a Trojan horse-like mission in which they can send in a large inspection vessel filled with many roborats. Once inside, the larger vessel would open for the roborats to inspect the smaller, tighter spaces.

The manufacturer created these rats by studying the movements of rattus norvegicus through x-ray machine recordings.
